The CVS-Aetna Deal Transforms Pharmacies into Wellness Centers

The Wall Street Journal broke the news of the CVS-Aetna deal on Monday. While the $69 billion price tag grabbed all of the attention, the eleventh paragraph in the front page story was the most important for us, and our 6,000 independent pharmacy customers:

“The logic of the deal centers on a plan to use CVS’s nearly 10,000 U.S. pharmacy locations to provide consumers with more local care options. CVS, which has for years been seeking to move further into health care, plans to repurpose portions of its pharmacies so they become community health centers where customers can get answers about their health and coverage—and how to manage the cost of it, the companies said. The pharmacies will have space dedicated to wellness and could provide services in areas like vision, hearing and nutrition.” – Wall Street Journal, Monday December 3, 2017 (https://www.wsj.com/articles/cvs-to-buy-aetna-for-69-billion-1512325099)

Bottom line, it is now more urgent than ever that independent pharmacy use their local, first-mover advantage as community health centers. While employing a nurse practitioner, optician or doctor might be unrealistic, simple wellness classes are an effective way to begin repositioning a pharmacy brand from a place patients go to pick up their meds to a place where patients go to learn about and engage in their health.

In anticipation of this transformation, we partnered with independent pharmacies nationwide this year to offer interactive wellness classes that can be delivered in-store or on a pharmacy’s website.  We focused on the six big conditions that impact DIR fees. Here, you can see how AM Pharmacy in Round Rock,TX is offering these wellness classes to their patients.
