Last week, we covered the 5 Do’s of SEO. If you missed it, you can read it here.

Avoiding the listed 4 common SEO mistakes are just as important, if not more important as making sure you are following SEO best practices.

The Four Common SEO Mistakes to Avoid:

  • Forget to make a site that is mobile friendly. Presently, more search traffic comes from mobile devices than desktops. If your site is not optimized for mobile viewing, it may not show up at the top of the mobile results because it is harder for searchers to navigate and use.
  • Overuse keywords in close proximity. Using keywords in website headlines and bodies of content is known to positively influence SEO, however, overusing keywords can correlate with lower rankings. It is recommended to focus on providing content and use keywords only when they are relevant.
  • Create a site that loads slowly. Using cheaper hosting plans that cause your site to load more slowly may result in lower search engine rankings. Investing in a premium hosting program and optimizing your code by removing unnecessary characters may dramatically increase your site speed, thus increasing your search engine rankings.
  • Publish pages with duplicate content. This occurs when more than one page contains the same information. Pages with duplicate content results in the possibility that searchers might run into the same answers when they click different links, which can lead to a poor user experience and thus decrease your search engine rankings.
