Every year, the World Health Organization (WHO) and their partners mark May 31st as World No Tobacco Day (WNTD). On this day, they highlight the health risks associated with tobacco use and focus on pushing for effective policies to reduce the consumption of tobacco.
This year’s theme is “Tobacco – a threat to development.”
The WHO estimates about 6 million people die from tobacco use annually. By 2030, they expect this number to jump to more than 8 million each year if no action is taken.
This year’s campaign demonstrates the threat tobacco poses on the health and economic well-being of our world. As a part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, WHO is calling on countries across the globe to make tobacco control efforts a priority.
The WHO and their partners stress people on an individual level can in fact make a difference toward making our world tobacco-free. For example, anyone can pledge to never start using tobacco. For those using tobacco, anyone can quit and seek help. In turn, they protect their own health as well as those exposed to second-hand smoke.
“World No Tobacco Day on May 31st is just the beginning. Although the statistics can be overwhelming, we can make a difference. Pharmacists are on the front lines and can have the biggest impact by educating patients,” said Anyssa Garza, Pharm.D., vice president of content and patient education for Digital Pharmacist.
“Offering wellness classes such as smoking cessation is a great way to add value to the community you love and serve. It can also set your pharmacy apart from the competition,” she went on to say. “We are thrilled to partner with community pharmacists to offer this service. Our goal is to remove the burden of course creation and implementation and let pharmacists focus on their patients.”
